SUMMARY:Behind the Curtain: Creating the New Datums and Map Projections of the Modernized NSRS
DESCRIPTION:It is nearly upon us. NOAA’s National Geodetic Survey (NGS) has redefined the entire National Spatial Reference System (NSRS). Nearly two decades in the making\, preliminary versions of all components of the Modernized NSRS are available for public review and comment. The complete system will be unleashed in 2027. Every coordinate in the U.S. will change. New “horizontal” and “vertical” datums will replace the existing datums. All zones of the State Plane Coordinate System will be replaced\, with many new zones added. The international foot will replace the U.S. survey foot. All coordinates will have a date (“epoch”) to account for the fact that everything is moving. This presentation gives a peek behind the curtain to show what was done by NGS and why\, along with new tools. Despite its behind-the-curtain complexity\, the Modernized NSRS will be easier to use\, more consistent\, and more accurate than anything before\, to better serve the GIS\, mapping\, surveying\, and engineering professions.\n &nbsp\;Keywords:&nbsp\;National Spatial Reference System (NSRS)\, NSRS modernization\, New datums\, State Plane Coordinate System\, Time-dependent coordinates\, Coordinate epochs\, U.S. survey foot\, International foot\n\nAttendance at technical short courses is included with full conference registration and pre-registration is not required. Note that seats are available on a first-come/first-served basis.&nbsp\;\n\n

SUMMARY:Cartography and Map Design Boot Camp: Theory and Best Practice Fundamentals Full-Day Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Merely using tools of the trade does not make a person an effective mechanic\, surgeon….or cartographer. An effective\, successful map portrays a place\, delivers a message\, or reveals a pattern with representational accuracy and visual clarity. The test of accuracy and clarity is how well the audience perceives the map and understands its intended purpose. This workshop is designed to help mapmakers achieve that result and to enable anyone involved in the mapmaking process to understand how that happens.\nThis is a one-day survey of a subject that can take years to master. Even for someone who has been making maps for years\, mastery can erode as new data\, new techniques\, and new technologies bring fresh design challenges and potential. The good news is that full mastery of this broad subject is not required to make good and successful maps. At least some knowledge about\, or a better understanding of\, the individual topics that we will cover in this workshop can help us all make successful maps and take on new cartographic design challenges.\n&nbsp\;\n1. Why make a map\n2. Essentials of map theory\n3. Cartographic Process – Connecting the map client with the map user via the cartographer\n4. Map Element Fundamentals\n5. Map Data Best Practices\n6. Essential Map Design\n7. Map Production\n8. Reading the Map – Map evaluation\n\nCost: One full-day or one half-day workshop is included with full conference registration. The cost to add a second half-day workshop is $100 member/$125 nonmember.

SUMMARY:A Gentle Introduction to Spatial Statistics in ArcGIS Pro
DESCRIPTION:Does the word “statistics” scare you? It doesn't have to. This short course is about how spatial statistics help you see patterns: Are things are clustered\, spread out\, or related to what’s around them\, and if that relationship matters. ArcGIS Pro’s Spatial Statistics toolbox contains tools for analyzing spatial distributions\, patterns\, processes\, and relationships. A classic question spatial statistics can answer is: "Is the pattern I'm seeing on this map a real trend\, or is it just happening by chance?" While anyone can look at a map and see "clusters" of points\, humans are naturally biased to find patterns even when they aren't there. Spatial statistics can prove if those patterns are statistically significant\, that is\, are they meaningful or not. This course is about understanding what spatial stats can tell us\, not the math behind them. We’ll examine use cases and begin to learn to interpret the results of the spatial statistics. No previous statistics background is required.\n&nbsp\;Keywords:&nbsp\;Spatial analysis\, Spatial statistics\n\nAttendance at technical short courses is included with full conference registration and pre-registration is not required. Note that seats are available on a first-come/first-served basis.&nbsp\;

SUMMARY:GeoSID Talk: Launching Your Career: Mapping the Transition from Student to Geospatial Professional
DESCRIPTION:The transition from student to Geospatial professional is not often taught in the classroom. There is a large difference between submitting a map for a grade and delivering geospatial outputs to inform real-world decisions. Oftentimes\, emerging geospatial professionals feel overwhelmed or experience “imposter syndrome” because academic assignments come with clear objectives and defined steps while tackling a professional project can be ambiguous. GIS is more than just making maps\, and success in the field depends not just on technical ability\, but also how GIS can be a tool for decision making and storytelling. As a rapidly evolving field\, GIS requires continuous learning and adaptability\, which can make it difficult for early career professionals to find their niche. This presentation maps my transition from student to professional\, highlighting lessons learned\, common challenges\, and strategies for navigating the first year in the profession.\nKeywords: emerging professionals\, gis academics\, transition to workforce\, career development\n\nMapping the Transition from Student to Geospatial Professional\nAllison Bednar\, M.S.\, GIS Analyst\, Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council\, Tampa\, FL - USA\n\n

SUMMARY:Panel: Geospatial Industry Readiness: Bring the Modernized NSRS to Your Tools and Workflows
DESCRIPTION:As the National Geodetic Survey (NGS) nears the full implementation of the modernized National Spatial Reference System (NSRS)\, the transition from legacy datums like NAD 83 and NAVD 88 to time-dependent\, geopotential-based frames\, like NATRF2022 and NAPGD2022\, presents a significant shift for the GIS community. While the theoretical foundations are established\, the practical success of this transition depends on the readiness of the hardware\, software and workflows used by the community. \n\nThis panel session brings together leading geospatial hardware and software vendors alongside representatives from the open-source community to discuss the technical roadmap for NSRS integration. Panelists will move beyond theory to address how they are updating commercial-off-the-shelf platforms\, field collection hardware\, and open-source libraries to support State Plane Coordinate System of 2022\, time-dependent coordinates\, coordinate transformations and the elimination of the U.S. Survey Foot.\n\nKeywords:&nbsp\;datum\, NSRS\, NGS\, data\, government\, agency\n\nPanelists\nGalen Scott\, NGS Constituent Manager\, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey\, Silver Spring\, MD - USA\nMichael Dennis\, NOAA's National Geodetic Survey\, Silver Spring\, MD - USA\n\n

SUMMARY:GeoSID Talk: Hearts and Minds\, Influencing GIS at your Organization
DESCRIPTION:Getting GIS adopted isn’t just about building great maps - it’s about navigating people\, culture\, and communication. This GeoSID session brings together three complementary perspectives on what it really takes to make GIS stick within an organization.\n\nFirst\, learn practical\, field-tested strategies for gaining organizational buy-in\, breaking through resistance\, and demonstrating the real value of GIS in everyday workflows. Next\, dive into the often-overlooked world of organizational dynamics: understanding the motivations\, relationships\, and politics that shape how (and whether) GIS initiatives succeed. Finally\, discover how to translate your technical work into compelling\, human-centered stories that resonate with non-technical audiences and decision-makers.\n\nTogether\, these talks highlight a critical truth: successful GIS implementation requires more than technical expertise - it demands empathy\, strategy\, and strong communication.\n\nKeywords: GIS Management\, Organizational Change\, Buy-In\n\nHow to get your organization to buy into GIS: tips and tricks\nEthan McGhee\, Systems Application Specialist GIS\, City of San Luis Obispo\, San Luis Obispo\, CA - USA\n\n GIS vs. the Organization\nCarmi Neiger\, Ph.D.\, M.Arch.\, Lecturer\, DePaul University\, Glenview\, IL – USA\n\nMaps Don't Speak for Themselves: Storytelling for GIS Professionals\nHolly Kluever\, COO\, dymaptic\, Norwalk\, IA - USA

SUMMARY:Resting Places & Data Spaces: GIS in Cemeteries\, Communities\, and Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:From backyard burials to digitally mapped legacies\, this session explores how GIS is reshaping the way we document\, manage\, and honor the spaces of the dead. Through three distinct but interconnected projects\, presenters will share how modern tools like Survey123\, Experience Builder\, and municipal GIS systems are bringing new visibility and structure to cemeteries\, private burial sites\, and veterans’ graves.\n\nBut this work isn’t just technical - it’s deeply human. Attendees will hear how unexpected challenges\, community partnerships\, and evolving policies shaped each project\, revealing the sometimes messy\, emotional\, and surprising realities behind the data. Whether it’s navigating the complexities of private land burials\, mobilizing volunteers to honor veterans\, or helping towns bring order to aging cemetery records\, this session highlights how GIS professionals act as stewards of both data and memory.\n\nExpect practical lessons\, candid reflections\, and a reminder that even in the most grounded datasets… there are stories waiting to surface.\n\nKeywords: Cemetery Management\, Commemoration\, Community Engagement\, Digital Stewardship\, GIS Applications or GIS Databases\n\nModernization and Mishaps in Private Burials\nMonique Hassman\, MS\, PhD.\, GIS Coordinator/Land Information Officer\, Vernon County Land Information Office\, Viroqua\, WI – USA \nUsing Community Engagement and GIS to Honor Washington County Veterans\nMichael Vander Sanden\, GISP\, GIS Coordinator\, Washington County\, West Bend\, WI – USA\n\nCemeteries: Helping towns manage and provide access\nRosemary Mosher\, GIS Specialist\, VIEWSHED\, Yarmouth\, ME – USA\nJudy Colby-George\, GISP\, Principal\, VIEWSHED\, Yarmouth\, ME - USA

SUMMARY:Building Winning GIS Teams: From Individual Growth to Scalable Impact
DESCRIPTION:High-performing GIS programs aren’t just built on technology\, they’re built on people\, strategy\, and the ability to scale impact beyond the core team. This session brings together three perspectives on what it takes to create and sustain successful GIS teams in today’s evolving landscape.\n\nWe’ll start at the individual level\, exploring how participation in professional communities like the Esri Young Professionals Network and the Geospatial Professional Network helps emerging professionals build skills\, expand networks\, and accelerate career growth. From there\, we shift to the manager’s perspective\, introducing a “Moneyball”-inspired approach to assembling and developing a high-performing GIS team by recognizing talent\, maximizing strengths\, and making strategic people decisions. Finally\, we’ll see how these principles come together in practice\, with a real-world example of scaling GIS impact across hundreds of events by empowering non-GIS staff with self-service mapping tools.\n\nTogether\, these presentations tell a cohesive story: when individuals grow\, teams strengthen and when teams are designed well\, their impact can scale far beyond their size.\n\nKeywords: Professional Development\, Networking\, Mentoring\, Team\, Growth\, Building to Scale\n\nTurning Community Participation into Career Momentum\nLogan Stevens\, ArcGIS Enterprise Release Engineer/Esri YPN Advisory Board Member\, Esri\, Charlotte\, NC - USA\nMarcus Seepersad\, Brand Marketing Specialist\, Esri\, Redlands\, CA - USA\n\nA GIS Manager's Team Development - the Moneyball Approach\nGreg Babinski\, MA\, GISP\, EthicalGEO Fellow\, GIS Management Consultant\, GIS Management Consulting Services LLC\, Edmonds\, WA – USA\n\nScaling Event Maps Without Scaling the GIS Team\nNathan Holman\, Geospatial Solutions Administrator\, American Cancer Society\, Decatur\, GA - USA\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Advancing Equity Through GIS: Spatial Approaches to Social Justice and Access
DESCRIPTION:Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are increasingly at the forefront of advancing equity and social justice\, offering powerful tools to uncover disparities\, inform policy\, and improve access to essential services. This session brings together four diverse yet interconnected presentations that demonstrate how spatial analysis can drive more equitable outcomes across transportation\, healthcare\, and public investment.\n\nAttendees will explore how GIS is being used to identify transportation barriers to public health resources in both urban and rural communities\, revealing critical gaps that impact quality of life. The session will also examine spatial methods for evaluating the distribution and accessibility of primary healthcare services in rapidly growing urban environments. Expanding into mobility systems\, presenters will showcase how emerging techniques like graph neural networks can model and predict imbalances in bike-share systems\, helping ensure equitable access to shared transportation options. Finally\, the session will highlight how GIS can support equity-focused decision-making by quantifying the societal return on investment (ROI) of policies and programs\, demonstrating that socially just initiatives can also deliver measurable economic benefits.\n\nTogether\, these presentations illustrate the breadth of GIS applications in addressing systemic inequities and emphasize the role of spatial thinking in creating more just\, accessible\, and data-driven communities.\n\nMapping Transportation Access to Public Health Options\nNatalie Blackert\, GIS Specialist\, Bay-Lake Regional Planning Commission\, De Pere\, WI - USA \nUsing GIS for Planning the Location of Primary Healthcare centers in Jeddah City: A vector and raster-based approach\nAbdulkader Murad\, Ph.D.\, Professor\, King Abdulaziz University\, Jeddah\, Saudi Arabia\n\nEstimating Imbalance and Wait Times in the Boston Bluebikes System Using Graph Neural Networks\nAbdullahi Bello\, PhD Student and Research Assistant\, Northeastern University Civil and Environmental Engineering Department\, Brighton\, MA - USA\n\nUsing GIS to Determine Societal ROI from Applying Equity & Social Justice Focused Policies and Programs\nGreg Babinski\, MA\, GISP\, EthicalGEO Fellow\, GIS Management Consultant\, GIS Management Consulting Services LLC\, Edmonds\, WA – USA\n\n

SUMMARY:Bridging the GIS Skills Gap for a Future Ready Workforce: What You Know and What You Don’t
DESCRIPTION:Formal programs can only teach so much\, and curriculum often lags behind the fast-paced technological evolution\, resulting in Geospatial graduates and early career professionals struggling to “catch up” with industry knowledge and skills that weren’t perhaps explicitly part of a degree program. This session explores some of the knowledge gaps in foundational IT and Data architecture knowledge\, as well as what modern GeoAI means for how data is analyzed\, workflows are designed\, and results interpreted and integrated back into GIS for visual insights.\n\nThis session examines the skills GIS professionals which span beyond those GIS taught in traditional programs. Some key foundation concepts which are crucial but may be underdeveloped include IT infrastructure fundamentals\, Networking fundamentals\, Database Design\, and\, if an Esri ArcGIS shop\, the ArcGIS architecture foundations. Also\, as AI continues to evolve\, it is imperative that GIS students and professionals are aware of and implementing GeoAI tools\, analyses\, and capabilities.\n\nKeywords: Leadership\, Professional\, career\, development\, IT skills\, GeoAI\n\nOregon State Geomatics: A Novel Approach for Building Soft & Hard Skills for the Classroom and Workplace\nBrett Murphy\, Professional Land Surveyor (PLS)\, Instructor of Geoamtics\, Oregon State University\, Albany\, OR – USA\n\nGeoAI Is Here. SUMMARY:Closing Keynote: Spreading the Word About GIS: Lessons for a Successful GIS Career
DESCRIPTION:Some advice on being a successful GIS professional drawn from Bill Huxhold’s experience of introducing GIS technology at the City of Milwaukee – one of the first urban GIS implementations back in the 1970’s and 80’s. Bill will describe how he brought a vision to the City\; his experience with different department personalities who showed reluctance accepting new technology\; and how important is it to share knowledge among other GIS professionals. It includes a brief history of the unusual experience that he encountered when the Wisconsin Land Information Program was created soon after he was president of the Urban Regional Information Systems Association (now GPN).\n\n
